J.F. Sato and Associates (JFSA) and a team
of consultants joined Forest City Development in an endeavor
to redevelop the existing Stapleton Airport site into a mixed-use
community with many opportunities for sustainable design.
The community will comprise a network of urban villages, employment
centers, and significant open space. As one of the main engineering
consultants, JFSA worked on a number of projects within Forest
City, and was involved in every aspect of the project from
start-up through construction to the opening. JFSA's responsibilities
on each project have varied slightly, but generally involved
civil design for utility infrastructure, utility services,
and private and public roadways, bridge design and coordination
with public agencies.
As part of the utility design, JFSA prepared drainage analysis,
sanitary sewer studies, and water studies to ensure that utilities
will support the commercial and residential developments.
Drainage analyses and drainage studies used to design the
stormwater facilities were produced for multiple projects.
As part of the drainage design, JFSA investigated the need
for stormwater detention and water quality ponds, and designed
facilities as required.
JFSA prepared multiple sanitary sewer studies used to size
main lines and service lines for commercial and residential
developments. Project sites were divided into basins and average
daily flows were calculated based on proposed land use and
density as provided by the client. JFSA used flow factors
set by the City and County of Denver to determine average
flows and infiltration/inflow, and to adequately design sanitary
sewer to convey flows generated by the proposed development.
JFSA worked closely with the Denver Water Department (DWD)
to provide water demand studies for both commercial and residential
developments. Modeling software KY Pipe and EPA Net were used
to model pressures, flow rates, and pipe sizes for proposed
water systems and the existing system. JFSA also worked with
the DWD and Denver Fire to ensure adequate fire hydrant coverage
for the proposed project, and that fire flows meet DWD minimum
flow requirements.
JFSA worked closely with the City and County of Denver Transportation
Department to develop multiple roadway designs within the
Stapleton Development. Services included designs for local,
collector, and arterial roadways.
In addition to the design services mentioned above, JFSA
also provided surveying and stormwater management services
within the development.
