Harmony Road Interchange
Fort Collins, Colorado
J.F. Sato and Associates provided design and construction administration services
for this project which involved widening two miles of an undivided two-lane state highway to create a
four-lane divided section, and construction of an interchange with Interstate 25. The interchange serves
as the southern gateway to Fort Collins, and as a transfer point for commuters traveling south to Denver.
The project included a Transportation Transfer Center with 250 parking spaces where travelers can switch to
carpool, vanpool, express bus, or bicycle transportation. The centerpiece of the project is a three-span
bridge over I-25 that includes a 190-foot clear center span to accommodate future HOV or transit use. As
the gateway to Fort Collins, the bridge makes a distinctive architectural statement. The center span features
a spliced pretensioned girder design that uses strongbacks instead of shoring towers, allowing traffic flow
under the bridge during construction. An irrigation canal crossing presented an interesting challenge for
the project. The culvert was oversized to accommodate a skid-steer loader for mechanical removal of unwanted
sediment. JFSA designed a structure that enabled the loader to access the canal bottom, and the box as well.
Because the roadway above experiences heavy traffic volumes, box segments were precast to help expedite
construction. All of the work was done within 72 hours, and traffic flow quickly restored. The Harmony
Road Interchange project received several design and partnering awards.
