US-40, Berthoud Pass, Mountain Access Project
Berthoud Falls, Colorado
JFSA performed an Environmental Assessment (EA), Design, and
Construction Administration on this six mile project through the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests
which consisted of safety improvements to widen the existing two-lane roadway to three-lanes. In addition to
safety widening, the project added wider shoulders and dedicated snow storage areas. Because of the wider
template of the shelf road on the mountainside, retaining walls were required on both sides of the roadway
for virtually the entire length of the project. The entire project was above 9,000 feet in elevation, and
traversed the mountainous terrain over multiple switchbacks, climbing to over 10,500 feet near the top
of the Pass. Because of the challenging geotechnical characteristics of the site, different types of
retaining walls were employed - Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE), Tieback Anchors, and Ground Nailed. JFSA performed
the EA, Preliminary and Final Design, and Construction Administration support on the project.
